Running Is NOT Dangerous

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

While out for an evening run last week, I was advised, yet again, how running is dangerous, and causes osteoporosis.  In actual fact, weight-bearing exercise – like running -actually helps maintain bone mineral density.  In fact, running on a regular basis, especially as we grow older, reduces and slows the effects of aging.

According to an article in the Archives of Internal Medicine  elderly joggers are half as likely to die prematurely than non-runners.   It went on to state that elderly joggers also enjoyed a healthier life with fewer disabilities.  As the article stated, “If you had to pick one thing to make people healthier as they age, it would be aerobic exercise.”

I think I will go with that information rather than the well meaning advice given me while on an evening jog.  The long term effects of jogging, or any form of weight bearing exercise, can help ensure your heart remains healthy; it does keep stress levels and weight under management, as well as promotes better sleep.

In fact, running and other vigorous exercise in middle age is associated with a longer life.  And endurance athletes, such as runners, have better overall heart function than athletes who focus solely on strength training.

All of these benefits are not just for the elderly, by the way.  Although much is said about aging and maintaining bone mineral density, exercising at a young age, childhood and puberty, actually has the greatest effect on bone mineral density.

I will continue to get my grandchildren involved in exercise, and recommend my son continues his fitness routines as he settles into young adulthood.

And on a final note, it seems that if you break up your exercise into two daily sessions, morning and evening, then the potential for bone production through exercise is further increased.  So my routine of home gym fitness in the morning and an evening jog are a good thing!
